Hi everyone!

I would like to let you know about how I came to know God and got saved.

I had always believed in God in some way, but faith was never an important part of my life. I was a Catholic, but for a long time there had been differences between my beliefs and those of the Catholic Church, so I rarely joined their services.

One summer evening I was playing soccer with some friends in a park in Hannover, when we got talking to another small group. We played soccer with them and afterwards had some picnic food together. Chatting to them I realised that they were Christians, but that night we didn’t really get into that subject. After that, we met in the park for a few more times, and then one night I was invited along to watch a video.

We watched a documentary made by Jonathan Gray about the exodus of Moses and the Israelites through the Red Sea. I was very impressed by the archaeological finds and scientific research which prove that these Biblical events really did take place.

Afterwards we spent a long time with chatting about the film and about the Bible. The biggest surprise for me was to hear about many things that I had never heard about in church or religious education. Becoming curious, I asked my hosts which church they belonged to. In answering they told me some facts about Pentecostal churches and that today it is still possible to receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in a new language, just as happened 2000 years ago, as we read in the Bible in the book of Acts:  ACTS 2:37-39  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

ACTS 10:45-46  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

today it is still possible to receive the Holy Spirit

From this I started to understand that repentance, as part of making a clear decision to follow God, is a requirement to be saved on Judgement Day. The same counts for the decision to be baptised and to receive the Holy Spirit. This is made clear in MARK 16:16-18  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;  They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

After that evening, I wondered if it was really all true, and if I could find proof of the existence of the living God that way. If this step, as it is described in God’s Word, is really true and necessary in order to be saved, and if you can really receive the Holy Spirit with the sign of speaking in tongues, why then did no-one tell me about this in more than 25 years of my life…?

I found the answers to many of these questions in the book “They Speak with Other Tongues” by John L. Sherrill. Like me, the author of this book got to know people from a Pentecostal church. He also was unsure whether the experience of speaking in tongues was really from God, or if he, as some sceptics told him, was being misled by a sect. Since this question gave him no rest, he recorded some Christians praying in tongues. As a control he also recorded one of the “scoffers” (sceptics), as she had claimed that she could do the same by just imitating the prayers and speaking gibberish. He sent his recordings to a linguist, asking him to analyse them. The response was that judging by the syntax and patterns heard, the speech recorded was real language, though the linguist didn’t know which ones. Only one of the recordings was marked as nonsense and “not genuine language” by the linguist – that recorded by the sceptic.

I had to make a decision myself!

In due course, the author John Sherrill himself got saved, after he found this proof of the work of the Holy Spirit.

Some weeks later I was asked if I would like to join a bigger assembly meeting on New Year’s Eve in a ski chalet in Austria. I like skiing, and by this point was very interested in salvation and was hoping to find proof of God’s

existence, so I decided to join in. During the time at the chalet I experienced many testimonies and answers to prayer, and eventually realised that I had to make a decision myself: I had to be prepared to repent, be baptised and receive the Holy Spirit. I know that if God is real, and I must be born again of water and of the spirit in order to be saved on Judgment day, then this decision might be the most important one in my whole life. JOHN 3:5  Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

If it was real I would receive the Holy Spirit with the evidence of ‘signs following’. If the Bible wasn’t true and speaking in tongues was nonsense, then nothing would happen and I would know that I could ignore it.  And praise the Lord, a few days later I made the decision and was baptised, also receiving the Holy Spirit with the sign of speaking in a new language. God had set me onto His path of eternal life.
