Hello everybody,

Speaking in tongues is an amazing phenomenon that accompanies a person’s receiving of the Holy Spirit according to Acts chapter 2 (see ACTS 2:4 and also ACTS 10:44-48). When speaking in tongues, we pray. That is, the Holy Spirit prays on our behalf, to our edification, but our understanding is without fruit (1 CORINTHIANS 14:4).

However, twice in my Christian life I have experienced how people clearly understood what was said when a Christian spoke in tongues, in a language they had not intellectually learned to speak.

The first incidence occurred quite a while back when a Turkish lady attended a Christian meeting in Reutlingen, Germany. There was a time of prayer in the living room. A German lady was at this prayer meeting and spoke in tongues. By her intellect and training, German was her mother tongue and the only language she was able to speak and understand.

However, later in my car, the Turkish visitor, who was not a Christian at that stage, excitedly told us how the German lady had spoken and praised God in Arabic, although she had no natural ability to speak Arabic at all. God had given her the Arabic tongue when she spoke in the Spirit so that the Turkish woman was able to understand her and witness the miracle of the Holy Spirit’s leading. This led to the Turkish lady’s conversion to Jesus Christ, her baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost as per Bible truth.

The other incident involved my mother. When she visited us in Scotland, we had a prayer meeting after dinner. A man who could only speak English and German, when praying in tongues during the meeting, spoke French. My mother understood him, and thought he was addressing her. She replied in French only to find out that he could not understand her as he was intellectually unable to speak much French.

This led to my mum’s salvation.

The Bible says in ACTS 2:4-12

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?

In Christ’s Love,
